My first day on the Erie Canalway Trail. Howdy Hoo, what a difference! The trail is paved, flat, and reasonably straight, with lots of shade except in the middle of the day. And of course, no dodging traffic. No getting pinned against a guardrail with an 18-wheeler bearing down. No jumping into a ditch because the oncoming vehicle is riding a little too close to the shoulder.
The traffic is still there, however. The trail runs parallel to Interstate 90, not to mention a double set of railroad tracks, plus the Mohawk River. This is a busy corridor. It has been for hundreds of years. Thousands, even.
This morning the highway jumped to the other side of the river, leaving the Canalway Trail feeling quiet and peaceful. It was great while it lasted. But this afternoon, the sounds of a busy Interstate once again dominated the audio landscape. They still do. I am camped on a hill right now, high above the cacophony. I wanted to post a couple of videos from morning and afternoon so you could hear the difference — but I couldn’t hear the videos 🙂
No complaints, though. I’m very grateful to have stumbled across this Canalway: I’ll take the decibels, so long as I don’t have to share the road.
