Day 45: Saginaw to Sanford, MI

Dow Chemical Company: founded 1897 in Midland, MI

We began a long day with an innocent mistake that nearly cost us breakfast. But hunger didn’t slow us down; we still managed to put 29 miles on our feet before settling in …

Okay, maybe we’re not quite “settled.” It’s hard to settle in during peak mosquito season. Even if they can’t find a vein to tap, they won’t stop trying — and the constant whining is enough to drive a body mad.

I feel like I should say more about the towns we pass through. Saginaw was a lumber camp, then it turned to manufacturing — producing automobile parts for the production lines in Detroit. Midland was the birthplace of the Dow Chemical Company in 1897, and signs of wealth are still seen everywhere.

But I’m just passing through. On a day like today, when tomorrow’s expected heat wave forced me to log as many miles as possible, sometimes I don’t even stop to read the signs. So I’ll leave that kind of travel tidbit to more capable bloggers.

Now … how to rig this mosquito net so I can perhaps get a few winks of sleep …
