Day 58: Scandinavia to Plover, WI

We begin this vlog with a couple of early morning scenes from the Tomorrow River Rail Trail. But by six a.m., we’d left the trail in search of breakfast. Which we found at Fleming’s Cafe in Amherst — established in 1954 and currently run by the granddaughter of the original owners (along with others). The conversation up at the counter sort of reminded me of Elmer’s Cafe, with one of the regulars trying to tell a joke to another regular (“What’s brown and sticky?”), who instead of taking the bait, launched into a five-minute monologue about something that happened to him the summer before last, presumably having to do with something brown and/or sticky. The joke-teller eventually broke in, saying “You’re overthinking my question.” But it was another five minutes yet before he finally got ’round to giving the answer (“A stick”).

We rejoined the trail (or tried to) shortly after breakfast. And looking ahead at the map, today may have been our last day of trail walking for a while. Always happy to stumble across another trail going our way, but until then, let’s celebrate the one we’ve got. Even if it occasionally vanishes …
