We are halfway there!
Approximately. It’s tough to add up all the miles traveled, and even tougher to figure the miles yet to come. But Jake’s Corner, a truckstop in Winfred, South Dakota, is pretty close. We arrived without any fanfare a-tall, and celebrated with a cheese sausage dog and a ham salad sandwich.
The folks at Jake’s Corner were very nice. They didn’t charge us for the fountain drink. The folks in Howard, a bustling town of more than 800 people, were nice, too. Everybody’s nice in South Dakota. On my way out of Howard, a gentleman offered me a ride and when I wouldn’t take it, he gave me a large can of ice tea for my travels.
Also in Howard, I met a young man who plans to walk around the world in a few years. He needs to finish college first. But once he’s out there, I reckon he’ll cross paths with Pedestrio one time or another.
We spent most of the day leaning into a fierce wind that like to blow us sideways and backwards in a random stagger pattern. But we made our 26 miles, and spent the night somewhere between Vilas (population 19) and Roswell (population 21). I hope neither community has to get their signs changed on our account.
