Folks … never, ever pass another vehicle when a pedestrian is walking on the left-hand shoulder. He doesn’t know you’re there, and you don’t know what he’s going to do.
There’s a reason we walk facing traffic: anything in that oncoming lane is a threat, and we need to know about it. But we can’t tell from the sound whether a car is in that near-side lane until it’s too late. Meanwhile, I’ve had rattlesnakes buzz me from the grass by the side of the road. I’ve had strong gusts of wind blow me unexpectedly sideways. If I’m on a narrow shoulder, anything can happen.
Assume the worst. Don’t be reckless. I’ll leave it at that.
Today we had breakfast in Woonsocket, followed by a relatively easy 15-mile hike into Wessington Springs. Traffic was light (reckless drivers notwithstanding), so I had time to do a little storytelling. I hope you enjoy today’s tale.
