It’s 44 miles between Wessington Springs and Fort Thompson. The only town in between – Gann Valley – is three miles off the route and doesn’t seem to have any stores or restaurants. We carried a bunch of water when we started out, but the day turned hot and cloudless with no wind, and creeks and streams this first day have been scarce. We must find water tomorrow, or we’ll be in a spot of trouble.

Those Dakotas! I remember being a little kid at my grandmothers house in the NE corner of North Dakota. It looked very much like the landscape you are walking thorough these days. I was sitting in the shade under a bush looking across at the town (all two blocks of it) where the store was that had candy. I really really wanted candy. But as I sat there watching the heat waves shimmer I just couldn’t make myself walk across those fields to the store.
