Spinning yarns in Portsmouth

Spring Training has begun!

Yesterday I saw my first action this spring in front of a live audience when I traveled up to Portsmouth, NH and spun a few yarns for a small gathering of friends. The session went well – I even managed to handle a couple of curveballs without too much difficulty.

Here’s a little inside baseball: at one point during the performance, I heard somebody laugh at a punchline that had sailed by long ago. To me, that was high praise, indeed. I live for layered humor: obvious jokes alongside subtle wordplay that not everybody is sposed to get the first time around. Gives the reader/listener something new to discover on the next go-’round. It’s nice to know my knuckleball is working so early in the preseason …

In 35 days, I take the show on the road for a six-month, 3,300-mile storytelling tour on foot across North America. I feel like I’m in pretty good shape as far as the telling goes, but I’ve got a few more outings scheduled; I’ll use these next few weeks to do more fine-tuning. By May, I’ll be ready to hit the ground running.

Well … walking, anyway.
